Marrakech to the Sahara: The Perfect 5-Day Itinerary
The Marrakech-to-Merzouga drive is one of the world's great road trips — Atlas passes, kasbahs, gorges and finally the Sahara. Done in 3 days it becomes a bus tour. Done in 5, it becomes a story.

Day 1 — Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou (4h)
Cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), stop for tagine in Taddert, then descend to the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou. Sleep in a kasbah with mint tea on the roof.
Day 2 — Skoura & Dades Gorges (3h)
Palm-grove morning in Skoura, lunch in a family riad, then the switchbacks up the Dades. Golden-hour walk in the 'monkey fingers' rock formations.
Day 3 — Todra & Merzouga (5h)
Todra Gorge at breakfast (300 m walls, near-empty at 8 a.m.), then the long straight into Merzouga. Camel trek at sunset into the dunes; luxury tented camp with private hammam.
Day 4 — Desert immersion
Sandboarding, a Berber village visit, and a slow afternoon under the tent. Astronomer-led stargazing after dinner (Erg Chebbi is Bortle 2).
Day 5 — Return via Ouarzazate
Fly back from Ouarzazate to Marrakech (45 min) or drive the northern route via Skoura. We recommend the flight — the drive back is the weakest part of any itinerary.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do Marrakech to the Sahara in 3 days?
Physically yes, but you'll spend 20+ hours in a vehicle for one night in the dunes. We consider 5 days the honest minimum, 6 the sweet spot.
Is the drive safe?
Yes — the road is paved and well-maintained. We use licensed 4x4 drivers who know the passes; self-driving is possible but not recommended in winter.
What kind of camp should I book?
Look for private camps with en-suite bathrooms, real beds, and no more than 8 tents. Group camps on the edge of Merzouga are cheaper but noisy.
